Go for the PR

When we think of PR, what comes to mind is probably Public Relations.

But there’s an even more useful kind of PR:  a Personal Record.

When you’re working out, know what the best you’ve ever done is, for whatever you’re doing at the time.  If you’re feeling great and the conditions are right, aim to surpass it.  That way you’re competing not with your vision of perfection, or with whatever everybody else has done, but you’re competing with the best you’ve previously been able to muster.  That way you’re comparing you only to  you, which is the only comparison that matters for exercise results.

Athletes carry around their PR’s in their heads and can name the important ones for you.   You can develop that same outlook too.  Go for the PR!
